Property and Freedom Society

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Property and Freedom Society is an international organization created for the global promotion of "Austro-Libertarianism," or, to expand the term, the principles of the Austrian School and libertarianism. The society's motto is Uncompromising Intellectual Radicalism.

The organization's website describes the conception of the Property and Freedom Society as having occurred during a discussion at a Mises Institute seminar in August of 2005. Declared ideological influences include Frederic Bastiat, Gustave de Molinari, Ludwig von Mises, and Murray N. Rothbard. [1] The inaugural meeting of the society occurred in Bodrum, Turkey in May 2006.

The warrant for creating the society is detailed in the group's "Opening Declaration from the Inaugural Meeting", which declared on behalf of society members that,

As culturally conservative libertarians, we are convinced that the process of de-civilization has again reached a crisis point and that it is our moral and intellectual duty to once again undertake a serious effort to rebuild a free, prosperous, and moral society.

According to Paul Belien of The Brussels Journal,

The PFS takes some of its inspiration from the establishment in 1947 by Friedrich von Hayek (1899-1992) of the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) [...] The MPS still continues the fight for a free society. However, some feel a more radical organisation of "culturally conservative libertarians" is needed now that the MPS has become so large and diverse.[2]
