Semnornis frantzii (Sclater, 1864) |
The Prong-billed Barbet Semnornis frantzii is a distinctive Neotropical bird.
It is currently classified in the barbet family. However, DNA studies have shown that this family is paraphyletic (the toucans are more closely related to the New World Barbets than the latter are to barbets of the Old World); as a result, it has been proposed that the family should be split into five, in which case the Prong-billed Barbet and the Toucan Barbet would form a separate family, Semnornithidae.
The binomial commemorates the German naturalist Alexander von Frantzius.
