Professional Girl Wrestling Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PGWA is the Professional Girl Wrestling Association.

Founded in 1992 by Randy Powell, the PGWA is based in North Carolina, but has promoted women's wrestling matches and full cards across the United States, in Mexico, as well as in England and Germany.

The stated goal of the PGWA is to present fans with quality, 'Old School' style wrestling, as well as to offer wrestlers the opportunity to truly demonstrate their abilities. In an era when many women's matches barely last five minutes, it is not uncommon for PGWA bouts to last for twenty, thirty, or forty minutes.

While the PGWA does promote a number of live matches and events each year, its emphasis is mainly on 'GrudgeMatches'. These are matches held in a ring, generally without an audience present (and often sans referee), and which are videotaped for release. GrudgeMatches allow wrestlers to display the full gamut of their abilities, without the pressure of having to wrap up their match quickly, or having to employ repeated "high spots" in order to keep the crowd energized.

Though the PGWA has worked with some of the biggest names in the sport, it is perhaps proudest for its ongoing role in discovering and nurturing fresh talent. Women who got some of their earliest breaks in the business at PGWA include Joanie Laurer (Chyna), Nora Greenwald (Molly Holly), Amy Dumas (Lita), Mickie James, Malia Hosaka, Lexie Fyfe, and Persephone.

The PGWA Commissioner and 'Champion Emeritis' is Penny Banner, whose own storied ring career encompassed much of the 'Golden Age' of women's wrestling, 1954 until 1977.
