Zoo Tycoon

By all means, create a new article for it. You seem to be knowledgeable about it, and it will get cleaned up. Just make sure to be accurate, use wiki format, and keep it concise and simple. You can use the Zo Tycoon article as a model, and go for it! Remember, be bold! СПУТНИКССС Р 02:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Blocks

Blocks work off of two things: the username, and the user's IP address. When a user's username is blocked, if they try to sign out and edit from their IP address, that address is automatically blocked by the site software in order to prevent them from evading the block. (This is called autoblock, and unfortunately, is done by the software but uses the admin's name; the admin doesn't have any way of knowing that it happened.) This is ususally a good thing; the problem is, some people have "dynamic" IP addresses, meaning that the IP address changes from time to time (some, like AOL, change every 15 minutes and on every page load, so the IP is different from one click to the next). What happens is, someone uses an address and gets blocked, then someone else is assigned that address (by the ISP, not Wikipedia, we have nothing to do with assigning IPs) and tries to edit, causing the software to think the blocked user is evading the block and triggering an autoblock. (The software has no way of knowing that the IP has been reassigned.) This is a big problem, but one that we are unable to solve, since we can't control how the ISP's assign their IP addresses.

A second type of block can happen as well: When users edit the site without logging in, thier edits are recorded via thier IP address. If the addresss is engaging in vandalism, it may be blocked. As in the above case, if that IP is later assigned to a different person, that person will also be blocked. Even worse, if that IP is assigned to a logged in user, the logged in user will be blocked, even though thier account isn't. These are the worst kind of blocks; they provide no notice whatsoever! (Autoblocks leave a difficult find message on a special page, but unless a person is refreshing that page constantly they won't notice. When an IP block affects a logged in user, there is no message at all; the user will simply be blocked until the IP's block expires. Unless the blocked user tells the administrators what their IP address is, there will be no way of discovering what caused the block.)

My guess is one of the two happened to you; either you were assigned an IP that was autoblocked, or you were assigned an IP that I had blocked because un-logged in users were using it to vandalize. You can add {{unblock}} to your userpage with a notice that you believe you have been affected by an autoblock or the block of an IP.

The only other thing you can do is to complain to your ISP that their way of assigining IP addresses is causing you problems, and ask them to crack down on vandals using thier service as well as change the way they assign IP addresses. Complaints from customers are far more effective than pleas and threats from Wikipedia's administrators. Jacoplane 03:05, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

If you have any more problems, let me know. Cheers! Jacoplane 03:18, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Tycoon Games

Personally, I think you should. A Navigational template should do the trick. If you need a hand with the article, I can help you, even though tycoon games aren't exactly my type. Bibliomaniac15 00:58, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Tycoon-cvg-stub

Hi - I note you've recently created a new stub category. Did you realise that stub categories should normally be cleared by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting before creation? That way they can be vetted to check that there are a viable number of stubs (a minimum of 50-60 stubs), that the category does not cross the existing stub hierarchy before the stub is created, and that the templates and categories follow the naming guidelines for stub types.

If you can provide any information on why the stub was created, please add a note to entry for the stub at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries giving the reason for it. It has also been removed from the stub type list until this discussion is completed.

In the case of this stub, there are only 23 articles in the main Tycoon computer games category (a category which has the correct capitalisation for such games, BTW, as the stub category should have had). If there are only 23 articles, there are unlikely to be the required 60 stubs for the stub category. In any case, tycoon games are a form of strategy game, and as such are already well-covered by that category and template.

One more thing - stub categories should NEVER be "noinclude"d on the stub template. It's vital that stub-sorters can check instantly whether stub templates have the necessary dedicated categories, and with noincluded templates this is not possible without editing the templates. Grutness...wha? 05:11, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the speedy response - and also for being understanding about it! The main reasons for being a bit stricter on stub templates than others is simply that there are so many stubs (probably around 300,000!) Because of that, we try to make sure that any new templates fit in with some sort of logical framework, and also make sure that stub categories aren't too big or small to be useful to editors. Even so, there are over 1200 stub types. I've speedy-deleted the category and will do the same with the template once the last articles are swapped over. Thanks again :) Grutness...wha? 23:19, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Film Tycoon

I'd like to let you know that the following games: Film Tycoon, Hollewood Tycoon, Low Calorie Film Tycoon, and The Other Film Tycoon, are not "Tycoon computer games" in the sense that you have listed them. They are "text-games" games that are played (yes on a computer) on the internet, sometimes on message boards. There very little visual supplement. It is not a "Video game" as all of your other computer games are. The Filmaker 20:47, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Hi there. It wasn't even a minute in between when I created my user and when I was welcomed! Anyway, thanks for the welcome. I know the basic wiki stuff already, because I am already a user at the Homestar Runner Wiki. If you get a chance, you should check it out. - 82

thanks!

I just wanted to say how great it was to be welcomed as you do, Primate! It really encourages people to help wikipedia and feel great, so I just wanted to give something back to you. Cheers (and I did read your thing about signing off with tildas! -->) Simongoldring 14:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Help! from new user

I'm at my wits end! I just came onto editing Wiki because I saw an article that I thought could use help and now I'm immediately in a revert war, I've got a 4 day old admin, heah locking down the page, Bernie Sanders and now all my contributions have been erased and reverted and there isn't a thing I can do about it. I'm thinking, they tolerate this here?? I'm ready to quit, please help Straightinfo 04:55, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Bernie Sanders

hi primate; the page was protected in response to the 3rr violation reported here; due to the ip hopping, semi protection was the only real option. It wasn't due to a content dispute, a pre-emptive strike, or to prevent anon editing in general; it was because the reverts were coming from a variety of ips almost certainly being used by one user. This user, Straightinfo, (who essentially admitted that he was using the ips,) had not yet signed up for an account. I'm going to go ahead and unprotect it now, as it's been a day; i'm also going to leave a note on Straightinfo's talk page requesting that he read up on 3rr. cheers --He:ah? 03:11, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and unprotection had already been requested, as i assume you noticed. --He:ah? 03:13, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Primate, for requesting the unprotect. It is true I "reverted" more than three times, however, Bkwillwm wiated til I made a technical mistake in that my computer was not registering the change, so I hit Save Page five times in a row, the changes were all identical and consecutive. What this comes down to is Bkwillwm feels any comment which might make Sanders "look bad", is POV, even though the intent of the information is to present neutrality by giveng both sides at once. Straightinfo 23:16, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

RE: NPOV

In response to your comment on my talk page, If you feel that User:Straightinfo's edit are consistent with the NPOV policy, please explain why on Talk:Bernie Sanders. I am well aware of the NPOV policy; Straightinfo has misrepresented my complaints. I am fine with criticism of any figure in any relevant article. However, Straightinfo has used critical original research (see W:No original research), indoing so used information selectively in a negative manner, and used POV language. I am not the only person that feels this way, at least 7 other users have problems with all or part of the text Straightinfo has been reverting to in his edit war. I have also made several attempts at compromise. Straightinfo has simply reverted these. While I admire you for advocating on behalf of a new user, I suggest you take a closer look into the situation.

Also, regarding Straightinfo's claim above that I caught him on a techicality... this is simply false. Here is a link to my posting of 3rrr violation. His edits are not consecutive and clearly broke 3RR. Staightinfo has also been blocked under a 2nd 3RR violation that I did iniatate and had nothing to do with.--Bkwillwm 21:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Primate, I need help. There are no 3 reversions, however, since I've been blocked two other users have edited several times! --Straightinfo

User page stuff

Heya Primate. Thanks for your kind words about my user page. It's been a continual work in progress since I first overhauled it about a year ago, but most of the work was done over a period of about two days. Regarding your problem, however, the solution is simple. Taking a look at your template, I saw that you used a standard HTML table, with the first line reading:

<table width="100%">

What you can do here is add a "style" argument, as follows:

<table width="100%" style="background-color: #F8FCFF;">

where the background-color is the hex color of your background. The background color I gave, by the way, is the exact one that Wikipedia uses, so it will blend perfectly. If you have any other problems, feel free to ask! – ClockworkSoul 14:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

By the way, your signature is very confusing. Its not only the colors, but linking every single letter to a different page is chaos! I just wanted to go to your talk page, but instead was diverted all over the place because my mouseclick was off by a few px!

As for your sig: much better! :-)

Welcome to Esperanza

Welcome, Primate/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee, JoanneB, Titoxd and FireFox. The April elections have begun.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, please see the IRC Tutorial, which was written by one of our members. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Re: My greeting template

I'm terribly sorry for taking so long to reply but I have so little time and so many things to do... Anyways, here are my responses:

  1. Lupin wrote autoedit.js (which is included in popups.js, which you have) to automatically edit pages. The code to welcome you is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Primate&action=edit&autoedit=
 s#$#{{subst:User:Mathwiz2020/Template:Welcome|Primate}}%20~~~~#&autosummary=Welcome!
 &autoclick=wpSave&autominor=true&autowatch=false

Okay, let's take this part by part. First, it says, go to your talk page and edit it. Then comes autoedit. "s#$#text#" means to do something with s (I forget what) and replace the regex "$" (the end of the page) with the string "text". The "#" is just a separator. Autosummary is the summary to use, autoclick tells it what button (wpSave in this case) to press upon loading, autominor means to mark it as minor, and autowatch means to not watch it (or to watch it if autowatch is true).

  1. I can't do that using Lupin's autoedit.js, but if Lupin lets my change the code a bit, I could get that functionality :)
  2. Two words: view source. For the past couple of years, I have viewed the source of every cool page I've visited. Through that, and a lot of useless programming on my Geocities to test my knowledge, I have mastered javascript, HTML, and CSS. Just be patient, though, because this method takes a long time.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask me! --M@thwiz2020 21:01, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
