Prix Royal-Oak

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prix Royal-Oak is a Group 1 flat horse race in France for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds run over a distance of 3,100 metres (approximately 1 mile 7½ furlongs) at Longchamp Racecourse in October.

It was first run in 1861 as the Grand Prix du Prince Impérial, and was re-named in 1869 in honour of Royal Oak, a key stallion in the establishment of thoroughbred breeding in France. The race was modelled on the English St. Leger Stakes, although since 1979 it has been open to older horses, unlike the English race for three-year-olds only.
