Privoxy is a filtering proxy for the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), frequently used in combination with Tor and Squid. Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, filtering web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups, etc. It supports both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.
Privoxy is based on the Internet Junkbuster and is released under the GNU General Public License. It runs on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, AmigaOS, BeOS, and most flavours of Unix.
The most recent stable version is 3.0.6, released on November 19, 2006. The most recent beta version is 3.0.5 released in September 2006.
A popular add-on Privoxy ruleset is Neil Van Dyke's neilvandyke.action, which presently comprises over 7500 rules.
Privoxy is also used with Tor in mainland China to circumvent Chinese government's Internet censorship named Great Firewall or GFW. Under this censorship many websites are blocked by Chinese government including Wikipedia and all of her sister projects.
