Principal area

In England and Wales local government terminology, a principal area is an area established for local government, but excluding civil parishes.

In England the principal areas are

• the non-metropolitan and metropolitan counties
• the districts
• Greater London
• London boroughs

In Wales the principal areas are

• Counties and county boroughs of Wales

The term is rarely used in the context of England; in Wales, after the 1996 local government reform, it is now used as a term meaning the counties and county boroughs of Wales.
