She was born in Lausanne, Switzerland and on 20 July 1983 she married Dr. Leslie Medforth-Mills (8 December 19422 February 2002) in a civil ceremony at Durham and later in a Greek Orthodox church in Lausanne on 24 September of that year. The couple had two children, Nicholas Michael de Roumanie Medforth-Mills (b. 1 April 1985) and Elizabeth Karina Medforth-Mills (b. 4 January 1989) and were divorced on 28 November 1991.

Elena was remarried on 14 August 1998 at Peterlee to Alexander McAteer (b. 22 October 1964).
