Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine

The Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine or Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is located in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM). The ITM is one of the world's leading institutes for training, research and services delivery in tropical medicine and health care in developing countries. Emile Francqui was the first president of the Institute, which was founded by Leopold III of Belgium.
The institute has a strong reputation in AIDS virus research, hantaviruses, haemorrhagic fevers, leprosy and tuberculosis.
The Department of Microbiology of the ITM has been recognized by the World Health Organization and by the Belgian Ministry of Health as an international and a national reference centre for AIDS research.
