Prime Time Sports
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prime Time Sports is a sports radio talk show produced from The Fan 590 studio in Toronto, Canada. The program is broadcast from 4:00 p.m. EST to 7:00 p.m. EST on The FAN 590 and the FAN radio network. It is then syndicated nationwide throughout Canada along the FAN Radio Network until 7:00 p.m. EST. Since 2004, this radio talk show is also televised on Rogers Sportsnet. The 5 o'clock hour is usually simulcasted on Rogers Sportsnet Ontario and Pacific live. The 6 o'clock hour is usually broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet East and West, as well as at 1:30AM on Rogers Sportsnet Ontario and 3:00AM on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific.
The show was first broadcast in 1992 on The Fan with Bob McCown (a.k.a. The Bobcat) as the original host and columnist Jim Hunt as co-host. In 1993, McCown was re-assigned as their morning show host, and Dan Shulman became the program's host in his place with Hunt. In 1995, Shulman left the station to join TSN, and McCown was re-united with Hunt as co-hosts. Hunt stayed on as co-host until 2000 when he was let go by the station.
McCown is well known from his trademark sunglasses worn in the indoor radio studio. Other trademarks associated with McCown on the show include his deadpan greeting to his audience with "Greetings! Salutations!", his constant use of rich vocabulary to describe things, and his dry wit (which includes such quips as "Who gives a flying fadoo?!" and "Bite me!").
Bob's co-host from Monday to Thursday is usually Jim Kelley from The Hockey News, Stephen Brunt from The Globe and Mail newspaper, Elliotte Friedman from CBC Sports or Rob Faulds from Rogers Sportsnet. (On occasion, Friedman or Faulds fill in for McCown as host when he is either ill or on vacation.) During the four day period they discuss sports issues with several sports analysts such as former host Shulman (ESPN), Peter King (Sports Illustrated), and Nick Kypreos (Rogers Sportsnet).
On Fridays Bob is joined in studio by that week's co-host and two additional guests for "The Friday Roundtable".
Rogers Sportsnet and The FAN 590 are owned and operated by Rogers Communications.
