The Prime Minister of East Timor is the head of government in East Timor. The President is the head of state. The Prime Minister is chosen by the political party or alliance of political parties with a majority in the national legislature and is formally appointed by the president. The Prime Minister oversees the activities of the government and chairs the Council of Ministers.

List of Prime Ministers since independence on 20 May 2002

• 20 May 2002 – June 26, 2006 Mari Alkatiri (resigned due to 2006 political unrest)
• June 26, 2006 – July 10, 2006 José Ramos Horta (acting PM)
• July 10, 2006 – José Ramos Horta (officially sworn-in as Prime Minister)
