Pretty on the Inside (1991) |
Live Through This (1994) |
Pretty on the Inside is Hole's first album, released in 1991 by Caroline Records. The recording took place at in L.A.'s Music Box Studios. With Sonic Youth's bassist Kim Gordon and Gumball's leader Don Fleming in charge of production, the studio work took only four days and Courtney Love used to gargle whiskey during the recording sessions to give a raw edge to her vocals. The album features a cover by Joni Mitchell ("Both Sides Now", credited as "Clouds") and two noise suites: "Sassy" and "Starbelly". The last one is based on the main riff of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl", and features a cassette-played excerpt from "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac and an early recording of "Best Sunday Dress" by Sugar Baby Doll, Courtney's first band.
The only single taken from the album was "Teenage Whore", which went into the Top 20 in the U.K. charts in late 1991. Only one video was made to a song on the album, "Garbage Man". Both the bassist, Jill Emery and the the drummer, Caroline Rue, left the band after the release of the album.
At last count, in 1995, Pretty on the Inside has sold more than 30,000 copies.
