Presque Isle Township is a township in Presque Isle County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census.
[edit] Communities
Presque Isle is a small unincorporated community within the township located near the shore of Lake Huron. It is approximately 25 miles north of Alpena, and 15 miles south of Rogers City.
The community and the township are named for Presque Isle, which means almost an island in archaic French. A large part of the township consists of that "almost an island", with Lake Huron on the east and Grand Lake on the west and narrows strips of land connecting it to the mainland at the north and south ends. The community of Presque Isle is situated near the center of this "almost island".
The infamous "haunted" (according to local rumor) Old Presque Isle Lighthouse is located near this settlement and is open to the public. A newer lighthouse has more recently been built, called the New Presque Isle Lighthouse.
U.S. Highway 23 passes through the southern part of the township and runs along the western side of Grand Lake.
The southwest corner of the township is cut off from the rest of the township by Long Lake. The small community of Orchard Point is located there.
