The Prescott Channel was built in 1930 as part as flood relief for the River Lee Navaigation in the East End of London.

In 2006, a proposal was made to build a lock at the channel, to allow Olympic freight for the London 2012 Olympics by making the channel and the River Lee northwards a canal and stopping the tidal flow.

The channel was named after Major Prescott a former Chairman of the Lee Conservancy.
