Prentiss M. Brown Freeway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prentiss M. Brown Freeway is the name given to the portion of I-75 in Mackinac County, Michigan beginning at the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge and proceeding northerly. The first segment of the freeway opened to traffic in 1958 in Evergreen Shores, with subsequent segments to the south completed by 1963.

This portion of I-75 was named for the first chairman of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, Prentiss M. Brown, under whose administration (1950-1973) the Mackinac Bridge was built and opened to traffic. The segment of I-75 north of the bridge was named in honor of Brown simultaneously with a similar designation for I-75 south of the bridge in Cheboygan County for Governor G. Mennen Williams, under whose administration (1949-1961) the Mackinac Bridge was built and opened to traffic.
