Premier of the Northwest Territories

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Premier of the Northwest Territories is the first minister for the Northwest Territories, Canada. They are the territory's head of government and de facto chief executive, although their powers are considerably smaller than that of a provincial premier.

Unlike other Premiers who are appointed by a Lieutenant Governor or Commissioner on account of their leadership of a majority bloc in the legislature, the Premier of the Northwest Territories is directly elected by the non-partisan legislature in accordance with the system of consensus government.

Before 1994, the term Government Leader was used instead, but the title was retroactively applied back to George Braden in 1980, they were informally called premier by members of the Legislative Assembly even though the title was not recognized in law, based on historical precedent. From 1897 - 1905 the title Premier was also used.

The current Premier of the Northwest Territories is Joe Handley.
