Prasun Mukherjee

Prasun Mukherjee (1950-) is, at present, the Commissioner of Police in the city of Kolkata (Kolkata Police), West Bengal, India. He is an IPS officer.

Born in 1950, he had his Education from Patna University (Mathematics) and entered the IPS in 1973 and allotted the West Bengal Cadre.

In his policing career, he has been posted as Sub Divisional Police Officer, Arambagh; Addl. Supdt. of Police, Birbhum; Dy. Keenly interested in development of service conditions of the IPS, he has been the Secretary, IPS Officers' Association, West Bengal for eight years in two stints.

He is interested in wildlife and nature conservation, and was one of the founder members of the NGO `Nature Environment & Wildlife Society' (NEWS), Calcutta at the time of its inception in 1992. He has been the President of NEWS since 1996. NEWS is now one of the leading NGOs working in the field of nature & wildlife conservation. It holds awareness campaigns in schools, workshops, seminars, monthly film shows/ talks, wildlife photography exhibitions. It works extensively in the Sundarban area, holds regular medical camps in several villlages, helps in formimg self-help groups in villages, and is working towards creating awareness against poaching of animals and destroying wildlife products. Sunderban has the largest concentration of surviving tigers in the world and the poaching and killing of tigers by the villagers in the fringe areas and indiscriminate cutting down of trees has been a matter of major concern to environmentalists for many years.

NEWS brings out a quarterly colour magazine `ENVIRON', focusing on conservation of wildlife & nature. Prasun Mukherjee is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Magazine.

Mukherjee has been the President of the West Bengal Athletic Association for the past three years and has brought larger awareness and involvement of sports-persons and corporate sector personage in supporting the activities of athletes, who are participating in national and international events.

When he became police commissioner of Kolkata in 2004 he was lauded for bringing a no-nonsense style attitude to the workplace [1].

As the City Commissioner of Police, his main focus has been generating a people friendly approach in his 26,000 strong force, besides bringing in professionalism and introducing modern scintific methods of policing. Increase in visibility of policemen on the streets, better fleet management by visible increase in patrol cars, introduction of night policing through installation of 86 conspicuous Kolkata Police Assistance Posts at almost every alternate street crossing in the city, with reassuring presence of uniformed policemen through the night, improvement in traffic control resulting in faster movement of traffic, has been some of the achievements of his men, under his leadership.

In recent times, there have been a spate of people friendly programmes by Kolkata Police, in which Children from the lesser privileged sections have been encouraged to join schools run by 48 [[Police stations in Kolkata |Police Stations]] of the Kolkata Police jointly with a number of NGOs (Nabadisha Programme), play football during the annual Friendship Cup Para (Neighbourhood) Football Tournament, participate in boxing, shooting competitions.
