Prakash Jha is an Indian film director. He was born in Champaran, Bihar, India in 1953.

Born and raised on his family's farm in Champaran, Bihar, India in 1953, Jha studied physics at Delhi University until deciding to work on the family farm in 1970. He moved to Bombay in 1972 to study at the Film & television Institute of India, and has been making films independently since 1974.

He is best known for the movies Damul, Mrityudand, and Gangaajal, and the television series Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne. Many of his films are concerned with highlighting social evil. His most recent movie is Apaharan (2005) staring Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu.

He was married for a time to film actress Deepti Naval.

He fought, and lost, election to the Lok Sabha from his native Champaran in 2004.
