Prairie Oyster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prairie Oyster are a Canadian country music group.

Originally formed in 1974, Prairie Oyster released its first indie CD on Stony Plain Records in 1986. They were subsequently signed to BMG Records, Canada and Nashville, for whom they recorded five albums and a "best-of" collection with two new tracks over a twelve-year period. In 2006 they signed with the respected Candian indie lable, Open Road Recordings, and their first CD for their new label, One Kiss, was released in late August 2006.

The pigeonhole-proofed Prairie Oyster has never been swayed by prevailing musical trends and their never-wavering musical integrity helps account for both their longevity and the deep affection with which they are viewed by roots music lovers across Canada and beyond. Those fans include the legendary Merle Haggard, Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin (who produced their 1990 disc Different Kind Of Fire), and Doug Sahm.

Their early ‘90s albums Different Kind Of Fire, Everybody Knows, and Only One Moon scored major commercial success in Canada (platinum-plus for Everybody Knows) and serious critical acclaim in The United States. A series of radio hits and a trophy case of industry awards followed. A tally of six Juno Awards, eleven CCMA’s, fourteen RPM Big Country Awards, and many individual awards for songwriting and playing has solidified their reputation as Canada’s premier roots music ensemble.
