Prairie Expedition (elm cultivar)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Elm U. americana cultivar Lewis & Clark Prairie Expedition ™ is a new development from the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Research Foundation breeding programme. The cultivar was cloned from one remarkable tree that had survived Dutch elm disease along the Wild Rice River south west of Fargo, ND. The tree is distinguished by its broad umbrella crown and dark green foliage. It also grows very rapidly, averaging an increase of > 1 m in height per annum when young. Not yet commercially (2006) available, the tree is to be included in the National Elm Trial coordinated by Colorado State University in 2007 or 2008. It is not known to have been introduced to Europe or Australasia.
The tree is named for the Lewis & Clark prairie expedition of 1804.
