Porur is a town in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a vibrant suburb of Chennai. It is located at 13.03° N and 80.16° E and 52 feet (15 metres) above sea level. It is located 18 km south-west of Chennai city limits on the Guindy-Poonamalee road which eventually merges into the Chennai-Bangalore highway. For administrative purposes, Porur has been included in Tiruvallur district.

Porur is over 700–800 years old and it was a well known village in the pre-British times. The name Porur might have been derived from the war said to have been fought in the Pallava period. There is an ancient Shiva temple which is claimed to have been there for centuries. The history of Porur as a suburb of Chennai however dates from the post-independence era. During British rule, Madras ended with Guindy Cantonment. The modern residential localities of Porur date from the 1970s onwards.

Porur is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 16 metres (52 feet). It is situated on the Poonamalee High Road at the point where Poonamalee high road and Arcot Road meet. It is situated 4 km west of Guindy and 9 km east of Poonamallee on the Guindy-Poonamalee road.It is 5 km from Virugambakkam on the Arcot Road. Suburbs which surround Porur are Valasaravakkam,Mugalivakkam,Iyyapanthangal, Kerugambakkam,Thandalam and Kattupakkam. Some important localities in Porur are Sakthi Nagar,Samayapuram, Lakshmi Nagar and Alapakkam. The boundary with Mugalivakkam is not delineated properly. Mugalivakkam Main Road runs through Porur.

Porur is accessible by road from both Chennai International Airport (Meenambakkam) in the south and the Chennai Central Railway Station in the north. Either way, the principal junction in this route is Guindy. You can either catch a direct bus to Porur (which is less frequent) or one to Guindy and another to Porur from Guindy.Porur is 8 km from Chennai Airport and 17 km from Chennai Central Railway Station. Bus Nos 54, 11H, 37G , 254, or 18M serve along the Guindy-Porur route to Poonamallee. Fare is around 5-10 INR
NB: Fleecing by Autorickshaws is at its highest in the state. Avoid Auto travel if fare is greater than Rs 50. People are always ready to help if you ask.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Porur had a population of 28,782. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Porur has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 76%. In Porur, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age. The sex ratio was 938 females for every 1000 males. The township is administered by a Town Panchayat.
