Portland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,534 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²). 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (9.71%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,534 people, 2,225 households, and 1,495 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 433.4/km² (1,121.8/mi²). There were 2,286 housing units at an average density of 179.0/km² (463.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.89% White, 3.22% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.29% of the population.

There were 2,225 households out of which 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $55,949, and the median income for a family was $66,686. Males had a median income of $46,163 versus $30,402 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,240. About 4.1% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.8% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
