Portal gear
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Portal gears is a technology where the axle tube is above the centre of the wheel hub. This enable the vehicle to gain a higher ground clearance, as both the axle tube and differential casing is tucked up higher under the vehicle. Additionally the axles can be built lighter due to the gear reduction at the wheel which lessens the torque on all the other drivetrain components. Portal-Tek axles has begun building bolt in portal axle kits for most vehicles.
Portal axles are used on serious offroad vehicles like the Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer, the Volvo C303, and the Mercedes-Benz Unimog.
