Port Melbourne railway line, Melbourne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Port Melbourne railway line was a suburban railway in Melbourne, Australia. It was the first significant railway in Australia and was opened by the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company in 1854 to carry passengers arriving in Victoria at Station Pier, and to alleviate the high costs of shipping goods via small vessels up the Yarra River to Melbourne. It branched from Flinders Street Station across the Sandridge rail Bridge and finished in Port Melbourne.
The line was closed in 1987, along with the St Kilda railway line and replaced with light rail, this is now serviced by Melbourne tram route 109.
