IMDb profile

Porky's is a Canadian movie about the sexual escapades of teenagers at a 1950s Florida high school. It was released in the U.S. in 1982, and spawned two sequels (Porky's II: The Next Day (1983) and Porky's Revenge (1985)) of its own and many imitators of the 1980s teen-aimed sexploitation comedy genre.

[edit] History

Critically lambasted for its portrayals of misogyny, these films have nonetheless been popular with teenage viewing audiences (especially since their releases on home video) for their explicit depiction of sexual situations, although they are rather tame in comparison to more recent films such as American Pie.

Although it was filmed in Florida by an American director, Porky's was funded and produced by a Canadian production company, which means that it is technically classified as a Canadian film. It was, in fact, the highest grossing Canadian film of all time, until it was overtaken by the arguably more Canadian (and fully bilingual) Bon Cop, Bad Cop.

Porky's is the highest-grossing Canadian film of all time in domestic box office. In October 2006, Bon Cop, Bad Cop appeared to surpass Porky's in nominal box office revenues, but this is disputed, as it had not, as of the end of its theatrical run, surpassed Porky's in inflation-adjusted revenues.[1][2][3] Taking into account inflation, Porky's has grossed more than twice what Bon Cop, Bad Cop has earned to date. Porky's is also the highest-grossing Canadian film of all time internationally.

The first two films were directed by Bob Clark and produced by Harold Greenberg, who founded Astral Communications (now known as Astral Media). James Komack directed the third and last film Porky's Revenge. The first movie featured Canadian actress Kim Cattrall in one of her first major roles involving an orgasm scene in the boys' locker room. Her character's nickname was "Lassie" due to the way she howled during intercourse.

In 2002, radio shock jock Howard Stern's production company acquired the rights to remake the film.

[edit] Trivia

  • This was the first movie to gross over £1 million in Ireland despite having initially been banned, and only released after appeal.
  • The scene where Ms. Balbricker and Mr. Carter discussing about a penis with a mole on it was scripted, but when the boys kept on laughing while listening was unscripted.

[edit] Goofs and Nitpicks

  • In what could become a future anachronism, when Peewee calls Deadbeats (the restaurant they all hang out at and Wendy works at) to pull his joke on Wendy, he dials the restaurant's phone number on the pay-phone using 8 digits.
