Popular culture references in Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an incomplete list of popular culture references in the teen sitcom "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide"
- In "Science fair" when Cookie put the short circuiting machine and a huge rash, he seemed similar to Frankensteins monster, Ned also got hit by laughing gas and, because of static electricity, looked similar to Dr. Frankenstein.
- In the episode with the dance, the first song that plays is very similar to the song Hey Ya! by Outkast.
- Everclear was in the 17th episode in season 2.
- The weasel that Gordy chases after is likely a parody of the Gopher in Caddyshack.
- In one episode, the foreign 8th grade math teacher, Mrs. Xavier, brainwashes Ned to say "no" as they did to Alex in A Clockwork Orange, but it failed.
- In the episode about secrets, Ned and Cookie, after getting chased by Billy Loomer, ran to Moze, who told them "You guys look like you've seen a ghost" in a similar way Captain James T. Kirk told Captain Spock in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
- In the school picture episode, Ned's tip was to, "Look like yourself, not like someone you saw on TV". Then, a student dressed like SpongeBob Squarepants walks on the screen.
- In one episode, Ned has an espionage daydream, during which Cosmo and Wanda from "The Fairly OddParents" appear. Daran Norris (Gordy) provides the voice for Cosmo and Timmy's Dad in Fairly OddParents.
- In the episode with the golden notebook, when Mr. Sweeney sees Ned with drawings in his "notebook". Mr. Sweeney flips the pages in the notebook and you'll see other drawings. One of the drawings was the Nega-Chin, from the Fairly Odd Parents.
- In the episode with "One-Bite," when Ned is trying to make a sandwich that will be super-spicy, Gordy makes a comment that every hot sauce and spice known to man is in a cupboard, as well as several known to Dolphins. Timmy Turner from Fairly Odd Parents' Dad used a very similar remark about his new TV but uses monkeys in place of dolphins.
- Once, to impress the girls in his English class, Cookie took the name of "Sir Lord Simon Nelson-Cook", the Duke of Hazard, a reference to the popular TV series.
- In the recycling episode, a girl is using the same popcorn bucket you would in 'The Premiere' in Drake and Josh
- An episode showed Martin using a mop as a lightsaber caught on video, a parody of the Star Wars Kid.
- The same episode had played a version of the Imperial March which is heard in the Star Wars movies.
- In the episode "Guide to: The First Day & Lockers," Coach Dirga says "I don't care if your locker is on the ice planet Hoth!" another reference to the Star Wars saga. Cookie's "locker at the end of the universe" may also be a reference to the restaraunt at the end of the universe from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series.
- In the episode of "Guide to: Secrets" various references are made to the Scooby-Doo series. First, when Loomer is chasing Ned and Cookie, Lisa Zemo, who is wearing an outfit which resembles Velma's, is knocked over and her glasses fall off, and she begins to say, "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!" Second, at the end of the episode, the short kid with shades is actually Suzie Crabgrass, and she then says "If it weren't for those meddling kids" (Ned and Cookie) as is said at the end of every Scooby-Doo episode.
- In the episode of "Guide to: Dares" Cookie and Loomer want to be the king of dares. The dare to settle this is to jump over a Nurse shark (Jump the Shark) on a bike. Neither of them do it (although Loomer attempted and was injured). Matt Hoffman later completed the stunt which is a refence to Tony Hawk's American Wasteland where you use that stunt to feed Mega's Shark. This is also a reference to Happy Days. In an episode of that series, the Fonz attempts to jump over a shark on water skis. The term "jump the shark" has come to mean when a television series' writing has taken a turn for the worse (see previous link).
- In the episode where there were two new kids in the school at the end of the episode you see a kid with brown hair, glasses, a black robe, and a scarf that has the Gryffindor colors on it approach Ned, Cookie, and Mose saying that he is a new student. He also has an English accent. It is thought that he resembles Harry Potter.
- In the recycling episode, an artist critiquing Cookie's Pile of Bottles resembles Andy Warhol. In the same episode, Ned shouts "Insane recycling posse!," a reference to Insane Clown Posse, upon seeing a mob of excited recyclers.
- In the same episode, Ned referred to his bike as a "screaming-metal deathtrap." The same phrase was used in The Fairly OddParents in the episode, Engine Blocked, to refer to Mr. Turner's car.
- In the first episode of Season Three, the guide to dodgeball is a complete parody of Star Wars, in which Cookie joins the Dark Side.
- In the school movie projects episode, Cookie was dressed like Lando Calrissian on the set, though the outfit used the color scheme of Jedi Robes.
- In the episode when Ned attempted to make himself stronger, he suggested shooting himself with gamma rays and turning himself into the Hulk.
- In Dares Mat Hoffman appered with the same clothes he wore in the video game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland.
- If you listen closely in the New Semester episode Cosmo's voice is heard when Gordy is playing with dolls.
- The dolls Gordy played with are Dylan from Bratz and Chelsa from My Scene.
- In the Guide to "Principal" episode, when the Principal knocks out Vice Principal Crubbs, he talks to his roller blade as if it was a walkie-talkie. In the episode "The Demonator" of Drake and Josh, Papa Nichols also did the same thing but he was talking to his shoe. This might be a reference to Get Smart, where Maxwell Smart has a telephone shoe.
- In the Guide to VAMPIRES, GHOSTS, WEREWOLVES, AND ZOMBIES episode, Ned and Vice Principal Crubbs have a fight using Voodoo dolls which is a refence to the Black Eyed Peas video Don't Phunk With My Heart.

- Snake, one of the recurring kid characters in Season 3, seen almost exclusively in gym scenes, wears an eyepatch. This is obviously a reference to Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell's character from Escape From LA and Escape From NY. it could also be a reference to Naked Snake or Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series.
- In the episode, Guide to Lost and Found, the shoes that Ned wants are signed by Carmello Anthony. Anthony himself appears in this episode.
- Vice Principal Crubbs is a reference to the 80s hit show Miami Vice.Crubbs itself is composed of the two main character's names, Crockett and Tubbs. You can find him wearing Crockett's suit and sunglasses. In one episode he also said he wanted to be a vice cop instead of a vice principal.
