Pony keg
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A beer keg containing 7.75 US gallons (29.33 L) of fluid, pony kegs are half the normal sized beer keg and a quarter of a barrel. They share some resemblance to full-sized kegs, but are much easier to move around. They share all the inconveniences of big kegs: a deposit is required at the liquor store, you have to procure a tap, guessing the amount of beer remaining is a difficult task (lifting it and guessing or observing its ability to float), but if you can overcome these hurdles, they are a cheap way to throw a medium sized party. It will serve roughly 82 12oz cups.
In Cincinnati, Ohio, the term "pony keg" is widely used to refer to a carry-out store that has either a drive-through passage or a loading dock to which customers can pull up and receive service. That kind of store is much less common now than it was a generation ago, but people still speak of neighborhood stores that sell mainly beer and soft drinks as "pony kegs".[citation needed]
