[edit] Main sights

The city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. The central basilica, dedicated to Madonna del Rosario di Pompeii, has become a site for Catholic pilgrimages in recent years, most notably with a visit of Pope John Paul II on October 7, 2003.
