Politiken [pʰoliˈtˢig̊ŋ̩, pʰulˈtˢig̊ŋ̩] is a Danish daily broadsheet newspaper, published by JP/Politikens Hus, one of Denmark's leading media companies. It is published with the goal of being an independent mouthpiece of social liberalism in Danish politics. The newspaper was formerly affiliated with the political party Det Radikale Venstre (Danish Social Liberal Party), but has long shed its traditional ties to any specific political parties.

Dagbladet Politiken was founded October 1, 1884 in Copenhagen by Viggo Hørup, Edvard Brandes and Hermann Bing. It had an original daily circulation of 2,000 copies. The paper established its present location in downtown Copenhagen at Rådhuspladsen ("City Hall Square") in 1912.

The 28. of april 1940 there was an editorial in Politiken , where Winston Churchill was called  »A dangerous man«. This was a couple of weeks after the nazistic occupation of Denmark. The editorial was written after a conversation in the editor in chiefs office with chairman of the board and soon-to-be-again danish foreign minister Erik Scavenius, foreign affairs editor Einard Schou wrote the editorial.

The daily edition of Politiken has 110,000 readers. Jyllands-Posten has about 120,000 readers. Politiken Weekly is the international edition of Politiken.

Politiken relaunched itself on its birthday, Sunday, October 1, 2006, with a new format and new way of thinking. It decided to provide news online for free, and within the newspaper, offer more analysis, commentary and background pieces, calling it "thinking news" instead of "fast news."

[edit] JP/Politikens Hus

JP/Politikens Hus (translated, "House of JP/Politiken" or "Politiken Corporation") was created January 1, 2003 as a merger between Politikens Hus, formerly publisher of Politiken and tabloid Ekstra Bladet, and Jyllands-Posten . The merger was administrative, and both papers kept their editorial independence.

In addition to publishing these major newspapers, JP/Politikens Hus' businesses also include book publishing, printing, local newspapers in Denmark and Sweden, as well as a number of multi-media concerns.
