Police plane
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A police plane is an aircraft used by police forces for the same purposes as a police helicopter. A typical police plane is a single-engined light aircraft. The first police aviation department was established in 1919 in New York City with two aeroplanes. Fixed wing aircraft have generally been replaced by the more versatile police helicopter since the 1940s. However, aeroplanes still have their uses in some areas, such as border patrol, as their higher speed and greater operating altitude allows larger areas to be covered.
