Polatlı

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Polatlı is a district of Ankara Province of Turkey.

It is situated at the heart of the high Anatolian plateau nearly 80 km in the south-west of the Turkish capital Ankara. Far from the coastal Turkey, it is under the influence of a typical steppes' climate. The winters are generally cold and dry. The springs are the most humid times of the year. Accordingly, the vegetation is made up of vast steppes covered with grass.

Polatlı is best known for its high deal of cereal production, of especially barley and wheat. Sugar beet, melon and onion cultivation is also important for this district which depends on agricultural activities. According to this, Polatlı has one of the most vivacious agricultural product markets of the whole country.

It is also known as the home of the Turkish Army Artillery School which was reestablished in Polatlı in the early 1940s.

The ancient Phrygian capital named Gordion is within the borders of Polatlı. It is nearly 10 km away from the district's center. On his expedition to the east, Alexander the Great had cut off with his sword the famous Gordian Knot and this was considered as an omen of his coming rule over the whole Asia.

Polatlı also occupies an important place in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 as the Battle of Sakarya (August 23-September 13, 1922) had been fought between these two opposing forces in its immediate vicinity, which marks the utmost eastern point reached by the invading Greek Army in Anatolia.

Today, Polatlı is an important district of Ankara on the main road which connects the capital to the western Anatolia. According to the census taken in 1997, the total population of Polatlı is more than 115.000 and it is on the increase. Today's Polatlı is trying to become an indenpendent province from Ankara.
