Pol Roger et Cie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pol Roger et Cie is a notable champagne house. The brand is still owned and run by the descendants of Pol Roger.

Pol Roger was born on December 24, 1831, the son of a lawyer. Beginning as a wholesaler of wine, he sought to start his own champagne house in 1849, with the first growths released in 1853.

Pol Roger currently owns 55 hectares largely in and around Épernay.

Their champagne is typically a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir.

[edit] Relationship with Winston Churchill

Pol Roger was the favourite drink of Sir Winston Churchill. They produced champagne in pint bottles, solely for Churchill's consumption. After Churchill's death, Pol Roger placed a black border around the labels of Brut NV shipped to the United Kingdom, and renamed their finest wine Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill.
