Pokémon (ポケモン Pokemon), is a $950-billion (as of 2003) media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996 (it celebrated its tenth anniversary on February 27, 2006). The original Game Boy video games have since been merchandised into anime, manga, trading cards, toys, books, and other media. The game’s catchphrase in the English versions of the franchise used to be “Gotta catch ’em all!”, although it is now no longer officially used (except by Hasbro). Pokémon is also the collective name for all of the fictional species within the Pokémon universe. The franchise has 493 unique species that lie at the heart of the series, a figure grown from the original 151 monsters in the original Pocket Monsters Red and Green games.

The concept of the Pokémon saga stemmed from that of insect collecting, a popular pastime in Japan and one which Pokémon's creator Satoshi Tajiri enjoyed. Satoshi's formula took off in Japan and was adapted (and translated) in 1998 for the American market, with the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. These games allowed players to catch, collect, and train hundreds of creatures known as Pokémon and battle them against each other to build their strength. These Pokémon could then evolve them into more powerful Pokémon and learn different abilities. They never bleed or die, only faint—this was a very touchy subject to Satoshi, as he didn’t want to further fill the gaming world with pointlessly violent games.

Ivysaur (フシギソウ Fushigisou?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise, a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards, and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Ivysaur in the games, anime, and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.

The bud’s size may increase under direct sunlight, forcing Ivysaur to walk on all fours. Even though the bulb is now a premature flower, it's still unknown whether it is a plant or an animal. In a reversal of the bulb’s function, the bud appears to draw energy from the Ivysaur, as well as photosynthesizing. Carrying the additional weight strengthens its legs in preparation for the final stage of its growth. The bud produces a pleasant scent when it is ready to bloom, and Ivysaur will then evolve into a Venusaur.
