Point Guardian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Point Guardian is a Superhero webcomic created by Benjamin Carver that updates weekdaily, hosted by Comic Genesis, available at www.pointguardian.com. The webcomic started in March 15, 2004. The story takes place in a fictional city off California's coast called Point City, which is much like Los Angelos in location and size. The main character is James Gardner, a 28 year old former police officer, now Private Detective, who has the secret identity of the superhero Ultra. As Ultra, James has phenominal superhuman strength, durability, speed, and the ability of flight.
The stories evolved rather slowly at first, the first three issues were lacking, and fan support was slow, even with the author's high updating schedule of one page a day(This updating schedule changed after March of 2005 when the author decided to switch to strictly weekdaily to help him focus on art). A few fans also believe the slow fan support was also due to the fact that the author is a rather outspoken critic of other webcomic artists, feeling that some are unwilling to commit to a stable schedule and complain about the restrictions of scheduling aren't worth the praise they're given.
During it's run, Point Guardian has evolved rather quickly, a comic which at first seemed like a throwback to Silverage storytelling quickly became a deep character study. As 2005 came in, the stories focused more on James Gardner's personality, and less on traditional strength vs strength, as the author called it.
The author has also strongly given his views that politics and superhero comics should never mix, and that a good storyteller can tell a morality story without being partisan. The first day of the month is usually a cover, which usually is colored by the author, and the rest of the month primarily in black in white, penciled and inked by the author himself. This gives, as the author has stated, a 'comic book feel' to the webcomic, that a reader can pick up the entire issue at the end of the month and read it in one sitting, or read it day by day. Occasionally, the author throws in a 'Making of' character page, a feature he felt was interesting and borrowed from mangaka Nobuhiro Watsuki, whom Benjamin has stated quite an admiration to. These pages usually have mixed results with readers, as have the 'monthly guardian' mail answering pages at the end of the month, and the author has appeared to have abandoned those.
