Poinciana, Florida

Poinciana is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Osceola and Polk counties of the U.S. state of Florida. The population was 13,647 at the 2000 census, but like in many areas of Florida, this has grown substantially since. As of September 2006, there are an estimated 63,000 residents in Poinciana (38,000 in Osceola County and 25,000 in Polk County).

Poinciana is located at 28°9′21″N, 81°28′35″W (28.155768, -81.476502)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 91.5 km² (35.3 mi²). 90.9 km² (35.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.68%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 13,647 people, 4,153 households, and 3,563 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 150.1/km² (388.7/mi²). There were 4,590 housing units at an average density of 50.5/km² (130.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 65.10% White, 17.73% African American, 0.48% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 9.90% from other races, and 5.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 39.52% of the population.

There were 4,153 households out of which 50.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.2% were non-families. 10.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.29 and the average family size was 3.49.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 34.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,172, and the median income for a family was $37,688. Males had a median income of $26,860 versus $20,934 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $12,590. About 12.0% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.9% of those under age 18 and 12.3% of those age 65 or over.
