PodShow

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PodShow is a company founded by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom. Curry is often considered one of the creators of podcasting. PodShow aims to help people to podcast and publish their podcasts, and to help listeners to find podcasts that suit their interests. It also plans to use the marketing potential of podcasts by allowing advertisers to find the podcasts their target audiences will listen and allow those podcasts to put commercials on their podcasts and receive money for it.

In August 2005, PodShow received about $8.85 million dollars in Venture Capital from the Sand Hill Road firms Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, and Sherpalo Ventures. PodShow set up company headquarters in San Francisco, California in a temporary office South of Market Street. In February Curry announced Podshow L.A. a production division being setup by Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff.

[edit] Podcast shows

PodShow maintains a small stable of flagship podcasts, including popular shows such as The Dawn and Drew Show (a spontaneous comedy show), and Adam Curry's own Daily Source Code as well as cult icon Madge Weinstein and her controversial program, Yeast Radio. Also notable is Joe d'Eon's Fly With Me, the first airline pilot-produced podcast (an early hit with Curry, since he is also a pilot).

PodShow Music Rewind, hosted by Marcus Couch, is a comprehensive review of podsafe music in the form of a digest of the network's major MUSIC podcasts:

These MUSIC PODCASTS include:

In January 2006, Marcus Couch opened the format of Podshow Music Rewind to include clips from any music podcast that wanted to participate. "PMR" is broadcast weekly on Sirius Stars channel #102.

[edit] Podcast directories

PodShow manages indiePodder.org (formerly iPodder.org), a podcast directory that many podcast aggregators use to help people find and subscribe to podcasts.

PodShow also owns Podcast Alley, a centralized directory of podcasts.

[edit] Podsafe music

PodShow advocates and facilitates the production of podsafe music (music which can be used in podcasts without any licensing difficulties) by both independent and signed musicians, and the use and promotion of the same music by podcasters.

To this end, it operates a large repository called Podsafe Music Network, or PMN, which hosts any music which meets its legal terms' definition of "podsafe", and distributes the music to podcasters who agree to properly attribute the work and report the use. The music is also made available in streaming form to casual listeners. The site operates at no cost to listeners, artists, or podcasters.

[edit] Podcast hosting

Another arm that PodShow has developed is the PodShow Delivery Network, which provides unlimited free hosting for podcasts. The new network is in public beta and combines social networking with podcasting. Users can sign up simply as listeners who want to interact with their favorite podcasters, or they can sign up as podcasters. The system resembles MySpace Music with one significant addition: a podcaster maintains a personal page for himself, and another page that represents his show (or shows).
