Pochama (ポッチャマ Potchama?) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Pochama are famous for being one of the three species of Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Pochama in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
Pochama was revealed on August 5, 2006, alongside the other Starter Pokémon: Naetle, the Young Leaf Pokémon; and Hikozaru, the Young Monkey Pokémon.[3] The name Pochama is a portmanteau of the words pochapocha (ぽちゃぽちゃ?), meaning to splash in water, and obotchama (おぼっちゃま?), a term that refers to children from wealthy or upper classes. The name Pochama refers to the species as a whole, as well as individual specimens in the games, anime and manga.

[edit] Biological Characteristics
Characterized as penguins, Pochama have a layer of fine down covering their bodies that protects them from frigid waters as well as hot temperatures. Despite their cute appearance, Pochama are very proud Pokémon that dislike receiving food from their trainers.[4]
[edit] In the video games
One of the consistent aspects of the Pokémon games—spanning from Pokémon Red and Blue on the Nintendo Game Boy to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl on the Nintendo DS—is the choice of three different Pokémon at the start of the player's adventures; these three are often referred to as "Starter Pokémon". Players are given the choice between a Water-type, a Fire-type, or a Grass-type[5] Pokémon indigenous to that particular region; an exception to this rule is Pokémon Yellow (a remake of the original games that follows the storyline of the Pokémon anime), where players are given a Pikachu, an Electric-type mouse, famous for being the mascot of the Pokémon media franchise.[6]
Pochama is the Water-type choice in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.[7] Pochama appears to be the rival of Squirtle, Totodile and Mudkip.
[edit] In the Pokémon anime
The Pokémon anime series and films are a meta-series of adventures separate from the canon that most of the Pokémon video games follow (with the exception of Pokémon Yellow, a game based on the anime storyline). The anime follows the quest of the main character, Ash Ketchum[8]—an in-training Pokémon Master—as he, May and Hikari (as well as several other companions[8]) travel around the fictitious world of Pokémon along with their Pokémon partners, Pikachu, Blaziken,[9] and Pochama.[10]
A Pochama owned by a beginner Pokémon Coordinator, Hikari, has appeared in all of the 4th generation series, to date.[10]
