Originally created in September 2003 by Starlet of swaymyway.com, a plug board is an online script used for website promotion. All one needs is a website button, and a website to submit. Plug boards are free to use, but spamming of plug boards is not tolerated.

Most websites that are promoted on plug boards are personal websites, message boards, and blogs. Some plug board websites do not allow business and company websites to promote sites on their plugboards.

Common pixel sizes of website buttons and banners used to advertise with include 88x31, 80x15, 50x50, 468x60 and 150x110. Some plug board websites include buttons and banners to use if your website does not have any of the size needed.

Since the original script was created and released in 2003, the number of plug boards being used on websites has increased dramatically, and the plug board has become as commonplace on personal websites as Guestbooks and shoutboxes.

Since the introduction of the plugboard to the Internet, many different plug sites have been established. A plug site is simply a website dedicated completely to plug boards.
