This page offers guidelines which Wikipedia editors may use to decide if a historical figure should have an article on Wikipedia. In keeping with What Wikipedia is not, articles on people that are only of genealogical interest should not be included. See m:Wikipeople for a proposed genealogical/biographical dictionary project, and Wikitree for a project that aims to be the family tree of the human race. Wikipedia is not the white pages.

[edit] Always notable

• Recipients of a country's highest military decoration.
• People who commanded an army or a significant part of an army in combat.
• Holders of top-level command positions (e.g. Chief of the General Staff).
• People who are the primary topic of one or more published secondary works.
• Political figures that held international, national or statewide/provincewide office or were members of a national, state or provincial legislature.

If an historical figure does not meet the above, the below can be used as a guide in determining notability:

• Recipients of significant military decorations.
• People who have non-trivial mention in one or more published secondary works (family history and genealogies excluded).
• See Wikipedia:Notability (royalty) for guidelines on including historical figures who were royalty or nobility.
• See Wikipedia:Notability (academics) for guidelines on including historical figures who were academics.
