Platinum, a short-lived television series created by John Ridley and Sofia Coppola, aired on UPN in 2003. It followed the lives of two brothers, Jackson and Grady Rhames (Jason George and Sticky Fingaz), who ran a hip-hop record label. The show's theme song was "Music" by Erick Sermon featuring Marvin Gaye.
Sofia Coppola supposedly got the idea for the series while her husband Spike Jonze was directing a hip-hop music video. She then teamed up with her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and veteran TV writer/producer John Ridley. Ridley and both Coppolas served as executive producers for the series. [1]
The show may have been ignored by viewers, but it received much critical acclaim. Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker gave the show an A-, saying "Hey, I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I like Girlfriends, but clearly UPN needs a new flagship series, something to draw a crowd, and Platinum is it."
