Planet Namek is a planet in the fictional manga and anime series of Dragon Ball Z/GT, and home to the sentinent race of Namekians. The planet is fairly similar to Earth, with comparable gravity and atmosphere, though the sky is green and due to its three suns there is no night. The grass is blue.

[edit] History

Many centuries before the start of the Dragon Ball series, a great cataclysm hit the world, wiping out almost all the Namekians inhabiting it. The only known survivors were Saichourou, the nameless Namek who would later split into Kami, Demon King Piccolo, and the few super nameks who were exiled from the planet before the disaster, like Lord Slug (non-canon). Prior to the cataclysm, the world was covered with a plant called Ajissas.

[edit] The Freeza Saga

Over time, Saichourou gradually repopulated the world but the world was again threatened during the Freeza Saga when most of the nameks were killed by Freeza, Zarbon, and Dodoria. When Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma arrived to gather the Namek Dragon Balls, there were only about a hundred Namekians left. The numbers soon dwindled to only three: Saichourou, Dende and Nail. Saichourou died from the pain of seeing all of his children die, Nail fused with Piccolo, and Freeza murdered Dende.

Soon after, Son Goku arrived on the scene and challenged Freeza. Their fight damaged much of Namek, but after Goku became a Super Saiyan, Freeza threw a blast that damaged Namek's core and made it so that it would blow up in around five minutes. During those five minutes, King Kai came up with a plan. Mr. Popo wished for all of the people killed by Freeza to come back to life, and since it was Freeza who caused Saichourou's death, he came back too. Because Saichourou was alive, the Dragon came back as well. Dende then wished that everyone on the planet except Freeza and Goku (who decided to stay behind and finish his fight) be warped to Planet Earth. It worked, and everyone (including Vegeta, Gohan, Dende, and Saichourou) was warped to Earth. Goku defeated Freeza, and barely made it off the planet alive.

The Namekians stayed on Earth until they were able to use their Dragon Balls to find a new home that was almost exactly the same as their old one; they named the planet New Namek. During their stay on earth they lived at Bulma's Capsule Corp. facility. The children learned to play cards, the older nameks, including the new Guru Muri, became decent golfers. During their stay on earth, they also experienced their first night. The original planet namek had nothing but day time because the planet got light from three suns.

[edit] After The Freeza Incident

New Namek is visited once in the remainder of the series, for the Earth to find a new replacement for the position of "Kami-sama" (since the old Kami-sama fused with Piccolo permanently). Eventually Goku recruited Dende and instated him as the new Kami-sama, also reviving the Dragonballs on Earth with increased efficiency. (Shenron is able to make a second wish as opposed to the old one, and waiting time is if one wish is granted the balls will be stone for 4 months and if both wishes are granted the balls will be stone for 365 1/4 days.

In the Dragon Ball movie Return of Cooler, New Namek is attacked by Meta-Cooler's forces who attempt to capture all the nameks but are defeated by the Z Fighters. However, this is not considered as canon.

[edit] Buu Saga

During the Buu Saga, Kibito Kai teleports himself, Dende, and Old Kai to New Namek after Kid Buu arrives on the planet of Kais. Once there, they use the Namekian Dragonballs to reconstruct the destroyed Earth and later repower Goku so he can completely destroy Kid Buu with his Spirit Bomb.
