Place and street names of Penang

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The street and place names of George Town, capital of Penang, reflect the multicultural heritage of the island. The English and Malay names chosen by officialdom, reflecting the priorities of British and Malaysian rulers, are supplemented by a mostly unrelated and original set of road names in Penang Hokkien, the language of the majority of Penang's majority Malaysian Chinese community. As the Hokkien names cited here are not official, and are based on an oral tradition, they may be out of date. For the derivation of the Hokkien names, see the reference links at the bottom of this article

Since independence, there have been some changes to the official street names, which are noted in their Malay forms. On the whole, however, most street names in George Town are as they were when they were built. The word ghaut at the end of some street names reflects the fact that they are extensions of the original streets beyond Beach Street when the waterfront was extended with the construction of Weld Quay, ghat being a Hindustani word meaning a broad flight of steps leading down to a riverbank.
