Talk:Pitch (vertical space)

It struck me that this page leaned overly-much to caving without giving climbing equal prominence. My edit is meant to restore some balance. I am doubtful that the climbing term is a variation of a mining term so have removed that inference.
Also I took out the inference that pit, aven and drop were synonyms for pitch. My understanding (and I am a caver) is that 'pitch' refers to the need for rigging while 'drop' 'shaft' 'pit' etc. refer to the physical feature. For example, one shaft could be rigged as two pitches.
Finally, I have found no indication thru a Google search that Pitch is a term used in mining to describe a void or drop. This site http://www.infomine.com/dictionary/welcome.asp provides 17 mining definitions of Pitch, none of which concern a drop or void - it seems Pitch usually means slope, as in the geological term Dip. Personally, I think 'pitch black' means 'black as tar' (alternate definition of pitch), and has nothing to do with a dark shaft. Rather than place a tag on this, which seems a bit harsh, I'll wait a week or so to see if there is a supported rebuttal before attempting another edit. Comments? - Have restored the "45 or 50m" climbing rope length, as these are the only two lengths commerciallly available AFAIK. Also, removed the blog link, which has no direct relevance to this page (tho it is an interesting site...) Ian mckenzie 18:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- 60m ropes are becoming increasingly popular; I know several people who use them. The Barrabes site even has 70m ropes. I'm taking the liberty of editing to suit. Rwxrwxrwx 19:06, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
