[edit] Plots
Pirates of the Caribbean films are a series of action-adventure/comedies that take place in the Caribbean during the late 1600s. The trilogy is inspired by rides developed by Walt Disney, the actual Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disney theme parks that are found all around the world. The 3 'Pirates' movies are directed by Gore Verbinski and are produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The three principal actors in the trilogy are Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley.
[edit] The films and their success
Grosses to date have been astonishing, with the trilogy on pace to eclipse the Star Wars trilogy in worldwide gross receipts, and possibly even eclipse even the first three Harry Potter films, as well. If so, the Pirates of the Caribbean film trilogy would become the second most successful film trilogy franchise of all time, behind only The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
[edit] Worldwide grosses to date
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy $2,916.6 Billion
Harry Potter (first 3 movies) $2,637.1 Billion
Star Wars 1-3 (prequel trilogy) $2.424.0 Billion
Pirates of the Caribbean (first 2 movies) $1,618.0 Billion (with more to come) [1]
