Players in Pirates of the Burning Sea will captain their own ship as a pirate, privateer, naval officer or a merchant. Characters who are adventurers, merchants or naval officers will be either British, French or Spanish. All characters have the option to participate in swashbuckling avatar combat under three classes: swordfighting, brawling, and ranged combat.

Players will engage in both Player verses Environment and Player verses Player game play that will have the power to truly change the game world, especially with an economy driven souly by the players. The outcome of PvP and PvE will have a focus in conquering enemy nations' ports. Nations that unify the best ultimately become the most notorious on the Burning Sea.

Unlike the vast majority of MMOs, PotBS combat is real-time and tactical. During ship combat, players' speed, position, and heading all affect the ability to deal out damage and defend your weak spots. Though players may not have a problem playing solo, Flying Lab Software has made group based combat a focus in this game.

Submitted content is peer-reviewed, and then reviewed by the Flying Lab staff for quality and appropriateness. The hull of players' ships with also be customizable along with the flag and sail customizations.

Players with 3D modelling skills who are willing to meet the stringent criteria set for ship models, will be able to create 3D ship models using software such as Maya or GMax and submit them to be included in the game.
