[edit] Key players
Sorted by year of birth. Characters that spiked my interest, are quite unique and distinct and thus I think should be featured in the 'Polish' novels:
- Good guys - definetly potential to be the heroes of our stories, and basically characters I like.
- Lew Sapieha - b.1587, d.1633 (!-butterflies?) skilled politician and diplomat, the person with 'a vision' beyond his times (proponent of the Polish-Lithuanian-Muscovite Commonwealth, among other things).
- Jan Tęczyński (1581-1637) - b.1581, poweful magnate but a supporter of arts and sciences
- Jakub Sobieski - b. 1590 - politician, negotiator, magnate, father of a future king of Poland, Jan III Sobieski b. 1629. Being a father of a future king can give him some leverage - and ideas. Besides, he seems like a pretty good person himself.
- Stanisław Koniecpolski - b. 1592, one of the best military commanders Poland ever head. Pros: was said to be fair, honest, and had no enemies, patriot who spend most of his life trying to defend his country, often using his own money to recruit and pay the troops, loyal to the state (Sejm and king), understood the importance of towns and developed towns on his own estates. Cons: magnate
- Adam Kisiel - b.1600, last of Orthodox magnates, supporter of negotiations with the Cossacks, may be a vital link between Poland and Cossacks.
- Kazimierz Siemienowicz - b. 1600, inventor, engineer, great expert on things that go boom, travelled much of Europe and opposed 'weapons of mass destruction' and endangering civilians. Great character for one of the main roles, if you ask me :)
- Krzysztof Opaliński - b. 1611, a thinker, writer and politician, supporter of education and government reform. Will be only in his early 20s during the RoF, though.
- Łukasz Opaliński (1612-1666) - b. 1612, politician, writer. Pros: anti-serdom, pro-government reform, pro-strong government. Cons: magnate, only 20 by the time of RoF. Don't confuse with his older, but less interesting kin, Łukasz Opaliński (1581-1654)
- Wacław Potocki b. 1621 - minor noble, soldier, in his later life famous for being a writer advocating pro-strong government reform. Rather to young to be very significant in 1630s, but who knows...
- Neutral? can swing either way, depending on who writes the novel and what do we want :)
- Rafał Leszczyński (1579-1636) b.1579 - supporter of religius tolerance, seems like a moderate magnate.
- Stanisław "Rewera" Potocki b. 1579 - military commander, hetman, magnate. Just another commander to put whenever he is needed.
- Piotr Gembicki b.1585 - chancellor, bishop, influential in politics.
- Szymon Starowolski b. 1585 - pros: thinker, anti-serdom, cons: not tolerant in matters of religion
- Samuel Łaszcz b. 1588 - famous commander and adventurer, but strong cons: no respect for laws ('warchoł'). Pros: patriot. I guess can be played either both ways.
- Bohdan Khmelnytsky b.1595 - does he need any introduction? will support whichever faction grants Cossack the rights they deserved
- Jerzy Ossoliński b. 1595 - diplomat, pros: supported government reform, good political and economical planner. Cons: not tolerant of Protestants, arrogant and contempt for lesser nobility means he had few friends. Note: supported Władysław, will likely end up in the same camp as him
- Albrycht Stanisław Radziwiłł - b. 1595 - diplomat, politician, supporter of Lithuanian, opponent of Protestants (unless they were related to him). May support secessionist faction of Lithuania, will support anti-Protestant faction, will definetly side with whatever he views as best for his family (he had no children, family means other Radziwiłłs - brothers, cousings).
- Stefan Czarniecki b. 1599 - great military commander, equal to Koniecpolski. who was his mentor. Patriot, supported king Jan Kazimierz even during his darkest days. Likely to follow Koniecpolski and Władysław if they are in the same faction, if they split - all bets are off.
- Bad guys - seem like easy to make villains
- Jakub Zadzik b. 1582 - bishop, politician, negotiator. Cons: not tolerant in matters or religion, opponent of Wladyslaw IV and strong government (note: likely to be in opposite camp then Wladyslaw)
- Mikołaj Potocki - b.1595 - miliary commander (average), opressive to peasantry (pro-serfdom?), can disregard royal orders for personal glory
- Adam Kazanowski - b. 1599. Firend of Władysław, but definetly a bad influence, probably a thief. Greedy and arrogant, but Władysław trusts him. Question is, what does he think of Władysław? Does he really consider himself his friend? He did lend him money - but he did get much more in return, usually.
- Janusz Radziwiłł (1612-1655) - also know as "The Traitor". Greedy for power. Villian once, why not make him again? In mid 20s during the RoF, and his father is still alive.
- Jeremi Wiśniowiecki - b. 1612, magnate, enemy of Samuel Łaszcz and Jerzy Ossoliński, famous for his wars with other magnates, 'colonization' of Ukraine and conversion from Orthodox to Catholicism, which earned him many opponents among Cossacks
- Bogusław Leszczyński - b. 1614, in his late life another Traitor and a thief. In his early 20s at best during the RoF.
- Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski - b.1616. Again, main con is young age. In his later life, a good military commander, opponent of government reform, magnate bent on increasing his power.
- Bogusław Radziwiłł - b. 1620, cousin of Janusz and his vivid supporter in treachery, but rather to young during RoF for our purposes.
- Definetly important political players but I still need more info to have some opinion on them
- Konstanty Wiśniowiecki b.1564 - powerful magnate
- Jan Opaliński (1581-1637) - poweful magnate
- Łukasz Opaliński (1581-1654) - b.1581, magnate
- Krzysztof Radziwiłł - b.1585
- Krzysztof Ossoliński - b.1587
- Stefan Pac - b.1587
Note that there are quite a few more contemporaries which may be important characters - they are listed at List of szlachta.
Not necessarily involved in the political affairs, but interesting personas:
- Jan Brożek - b.1585, one of the prominent Polish scholars, in 1632 curator of Jagiellonian University library
- Michał Sędziwój - b. 1566 (and d.1636), alchemist, scientist, by 1630s in Prague, likely to be involved with Grantivlle chemistry enterprise
- John Jonston, b. 1590s ?, another scholar
- Johannes Hevelius - b. 1611, famous astronomer
For some musicians, see Polish_music#17th_and_18th_centuries.
- Szymon Okolski - b.1580 - noble, Dominican monk, historian
- Andrzej Bobola - b.1591, jesuit missionary
For others who lived in that timeframe, see List_of_szlachta.

[edit] LIST C Voivodes and castellans
Note: in most of the cases, the name of voivodship is made from the major town, and in English translation is the same (i.e. Voivode of Cracow ruled over the province (voivodship) of Cracow from the city of Cracow).
Note: in few of the below titles, instead of the city a province is mentioned. Castellans, especially those ruling over places that are mostly forgotten today, are not 100% verified: the name of the province was 'recovered' from Polish declination and may not be correct.
Notes: Most of the cities below can be found on a good quality map of Poland and our eastern neighbors (Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, etc.).
