[edit] History

  • Large Jewish settlement, known as Petrikev in Yiddish. Thriving and famous Hebrew printing and publishing industry until the Holocaust.

The oldest traces of the settlements on the territory of today's Piotrków Trybunalski date back to the Stone Age. The first settlements of the Slavonic people were created at the banks of the river Strawka in the early Middle Ages. In the 12th century a settlement was created at the junction of the rivers Strawa and Strawka in the regal estate, which soon became more significant than two other neighbouring early-Piast castellan centres in Wolbórz and Rozprza. In Piotrków, located at the crossroads of important merchant and communication routes and close to river crossings, it was easy to control trade and collect suitable payments, enriching the ruler's treasury. Such location enabled successful growth of the settlement. Its significance in this part of medieval Poland is confirmed by the fact that the rulers summoned here assemblies of magnates and knighthood as well as national assemblies (since 14th century).

The first information about Piotrków was found in the document issued in 1217 by the chancellery of the pronce of Cracow-Leszek Biały, in which the prince ratified the judgement of the prince's court favourable for the Cisterian monastery, concerning the liege subjects of the monastery wishing to get rid of this serfdom. It is very likely that during one of the district assemblies at the end of the 13th century Piotrków received a foundation privilege and municipal rights given to the town during the 14th remained. Yet, the fact of receiving the town rights was confirmed in the document signed on the 17th October 1313, drawn up by the office of Ladislaus Łokietek in which the prospective king calls Piotrków 'his town'.

Being an important royal town, Piotrków was surrounded by the defensive walls in 16th century. In the Middle Ages it was a great honour and privilege but also an expense so less important centres contented themselves with earth dikes or palisade. The historians assume that 20% of the towns in Poland had defensive walls at the time. During the reign of King Casimir the Great the first record of the rights for Greater Poland and Lesser Poland was carried out, which was later called 'Piotrków-Wiślica' Statutes, although the role of Piotrków in this work is not explicitly acknowledged. The 14th century was very successful for the town and its significance was emphasised in 1374 by the Koszyce privilege, in which King Ludwig Węgierski (Hungarian) mentioned Piotrków among the most important towns in Poland. The significance of the town was also appreciated by the founder of the new dynasty of Ladislaus Jagiello, who summoned the general assembly to Piotrków, during which he confirmed all the earlier privileges of the Polish nobility and clergy.
