Pinawa, Manitoba

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

'Pinawa is a small Canadian community located in southeastern Manitoba, east of Winnipeg.

The town is situated on the Canadian Shield within the western boundary of Whiteshell Provincial Park, which lies near the Manitoba-Ontario provincial boundary.

The community was established to support the operation of Manitoba's first hydro electric generating station but was abandoned in 1951 when the site was shut down.

Pinawa was re-established in 1963 after Atomic Energy of Canada Limited built the Whiteshell Laboratories, a nuclear research facility, taking into account the area's seismic stability. Pinawa was developed as a planned community; Whiteshell Laboratories was somewhat similar to the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario.

AECL closed the Whiteshell Laboratories in 1998 and the facilities are currently being decommissioned while the economy of Pinawa is diversifing.

Pinawa has two schools, F.W. Gilbert Elementary School, which hosts students aged Kindergarten to grade six. Pinawa Secondary School is also located near the elementary school, which is well known in the Whiteshell Area for their outstanding Pinawa Panther sports teams.

Pinawa is located beside the Winnipeg River, which is an amazing place accessible to boating, kayaking, canoeing, and other water recreational activities.

Pinawa also has a notable 18 hole golf course among other amenities such as beach, outdoor pool, tennis courts, and curling rink.
