Pilot Butte is an extinct volcano located in Bend, Oregon. Bend is one of only two U.S. cities with extinct volcanoes located within the boundaries, the other being Portland, Oregon which includes Mt. Tabor, Powell Butte, and Rocky Butte. The Pilot Butte State Park acquired by the city in 1927 covers nearly the entire butte and 100 acres. Pilot Butte itself is a popular hiking venue and requires an ascent of 511 feet to reach the top which is 4,131 feet above sea level. A scenic road also winds up and around the cone and saw 900,000 vehicle visits in 2004 and 2005 according to the Oregon State Parks Department. From the top, the entire city of Bend is visible, as well as several Cascade peaks. It is also where the Bend4th of July fireworks are set off.
