Piffi allkrydda

Piffi allkrydda ("Piffi allround spice"), or commonly just Piffi, is a ubiquitous spice mix found in Scandinavia. Originally from the Swedish company Kockens ("The Chef's"), it is now produced by Unilever under the Knorr brand. The Kockens logo remains featured on the product. Similar products are sold under other brands, sometimes with similar names since "Piffi" is not a registered trademark.

The Knorr version consists of "17 different ingredients, based on salt, chili peppers, onion powder, paprika and black pepper"[1]. Its ingredient list reads salt, monosodium glutamate, chili peppers, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, other spices, celery seeds, anti-caking agent (calcium silicate), nutmeg, coriander, cardamum and clove.

It is used mainly in fried and grilled food, but also on as a table spice used (or opponents would say, misused) anywhere salt or pepper would be applied. A very common usage is in the Scandinavian version of the ham and cheese sandwich, consisting of ham, cheese, ketchup and Piffi in bread covered with poppy seeds and heated in a microwave oven.

By connoisseurs, Piffi is said to be eaten mainly by bachelors and toddlers, and due to its prevalence, is often used as the exemplification of vulgar and unsophisticated cooking. It is sometimes associated with the Scandinavian equivalent of the redneck. It's sold in quantities of 200—800 grams, a sign of both its popularity and its indiscriminate use.[citation needed]
